At Alteryx, our vision for Artificial Intelligence (AI) transcends the boundaries of technology. Our mission is deeply rooted in a larger purpose: to harness the transformative power of AI to bring about positive societal change. Alteryx is committed to making sure that as we develop, use, and implement AI, we are holding ourselves accountable for ensuring we do so responsibly.
Imagine analytics redefined in a world where generative AI is everywhere; that is where we’re heading. Last year, we announced the release of Alteryx AiDIN, our generative AI-enabled suite of tools, and this year, we changed the name of our platform to the AI Platform for Enterprise Analytics. Building on the existing AI capabilities within the Alteryx software suite, and with more than 20 years of experience in analytics under our belt, we’re making sure our customers are front and center to benefit from these revolutionary advancements.
Yet, as AI adoption grows, the call for responsible AI has never been more critical. We are not only in the business of building advanced tech; we are committed to shaping a brighter future by addressing the world’s most pressing challenges through AI. This is why we are releasing our Responsible AI Principles. And it’s why we’re taking concrete steps to implement those principles, such as joining with the U.S. Department of Commerce in establishing the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium.
Our Responsible AI Principles
Our Responsible AI Principles are both internal guidelines and a call for responsibility across the entire industry. They reflect our core values: customer first, accountability, equality, integrity, and empowerment. Our interactions with AI – from our development and deployment of AI solutions to our employees’ internal use of AI – will be guided by six foundational principles:
Empower Societal Good: We are dedicated to AI solutions that augment human capabilities to address global challenges and foster societal and economic progress.
Fairness and Inclusivity: Our approach to AI reflects our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to enhancing access to our technology, combatting bias, and striving toward broadly inclusive data sets.
Transparency and Explainability: We believe in making our AI solutions understandable and trustworthy.
Human Agency and Oversight: Our platform safeguards fundamental rights by enabling robust oversight mechanisms, such as human-in-the-loop and human-in-command approaches, to protect the integrity of individual decision-making.
Trust and Accountability: We aim to advance security and privacy through established governance controls to promote and maintain user trust.
Reliability and Safety: We prioritize the safety and reliability of our AI solutions through rigorous testing and validation.
Our alignment with industry standards and government frameworks, like the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the EU’s Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, further solidifies our commitment.
Releasing our principles publicly is a strategic and ethical choice. We aim to:
- Foster Community Engagement: Openly sharing our principles invites dialogue, critique, and collaboration, ensuring our AI solutions are continuously refined through diverse perspectives.
- Driving Industry-Wide Adoption: We encourage other players in the AI space to prioritize ethical considerations in their AI deployments and release their principles and guiding documents.
- Promote Transparency and Responsibility: Our public commitment to these principles holds us accountable to put ethics at the center of our AI work
From Principles to Practice
Our principles are designed to be put into practice. We are committed to implementing each one through a combination of policies, processes, and technical controls to ensure that our AI work stands on a strong ethical foundation.
As part of this effort to bring our principles to life, Alteryx recently announced that it will partner with the Department of Commerce and more than 200 of the nation’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) stakeholders to support the development and deployment of trustworthy and safe AI through the United States Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI) and the USAISI Consortium (AISIC).
Established by the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology, the USAISI is a foundational U.S. government initiative under President Biden’s Executive Order 14110 on Artificial Intelligence. It will bring together AI creators and users, academics, government and industry researchers, and civil society organizations to meet this mission.
The Institute will create a unique opportunity to tackle safety challenges and build a robust, resilient, and responsible AI ecosystem to help Americans safely reap the enormous potential of this technology.
The US Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, stated, “The U.S. government has a significant role to play in setting the standards and developing the tools we need to mitigate the risks and harness the immense potential of artificial intelligence. President Biden directed us to pull every lever to accomplish two key goals: set safety standards and protect our innovation ecosystem. That’s precisely what the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium is set up to help us do.”
The Consortium includes over 200 organizations on the frontlines of developing and using AI systems, civil society, and academic teams. We represent the nation’s largest companies and its innovative startups; creators of the world’s most advanced AI systems and hardware; key members of civil society and the academic community; and representatives of professions with deep engagement in AI’s use today. The Consortium also includes state and local governments, as well as non-profits. The Consortium will also work with organizations from like-minded nations that have a key role to play in setting interoperable and effective safety around the world.
Alteryx is excited to be a part of this effort, roll up our sleeves, and get to work building a responsible global AI ecosystem.
Our Commitment to Ethical AI
Alteryx’s journey with AI is not just about harnessing its power but doing so with an unwavering commitment to ethics and responsibility. By publicly sharing our principles and actively shaping a responsible AI future, we are not only participating in a technological revolution; we are steering it toward a safe, fair, and beneficial future for all.
